Intergeo 2019 – Knowledge and action for planet earth

Intergeo 2019 – Knowledge and action for planet Earth.
This was the motto of Intergeo in 2019.

To see what’s new in the field of geodesy, it is mandatory to attend Intergeo.
With a 25-year history, it is the largest trade fair in the field attended by professionals who lead or work in surveying.

This year Intergeo was organised in Stuttgart. Between 17 and 19 September.
The host was Messe. A marvellous exhibition complex right next to the airport.

So you could go in the morning from Bucharest and come back the same day. That’s if you wanted to see the exhibition in 2-3 days. If you stayed longer you could also visit Stuttgart.
An extraordinary city where you can visit the Mercedez Bens Museum and Ludwigsburg Palace.
But you enjoy German delicacies. Beer and sausages are everywhere. 😁

Back to Intergeo 2019.
Intergeo 2019 was all about 3D, 3D scanning.

All 3D scanners were present. The fact that this year we switched from a Stonex X300 3D scanner to a Leica solution made us question whether we made the right decision.
It was confirmed to us that the solution we had is a great one. We can ensure accuracy on the construction site with the Leica P40 and speed for surveying building interiors with the BLK scanner. For the time being we are still missing the middle option, the RTC360. 🙂

As news I would note the new scanner from Trimble. X7 which made its first appearance at Integeo 2019.

Also new was the launch of Topcon’s GTL-1000 3D scanner from Topcon which functions as both a total station and a scanner.

3D Cadastre
Although we are far from having a 2D cadastre database, in Western Europe and developed countries 3D cadastre is taking shape.
Many GIS solutions.

After smart TV and smart phones there is more and more talk about smart CITY.

How will Romania manage to implement these novelties? It remains to be seen! It’s very important that all those in the private sector with real solutions in implementing the new developments to convince the state that it needs to take a step forward to better manage its resources. In a super technologised world we cannot look at 3D things in 2D formats.

There was a lot of talk about BIM, digitisation and how artificial intelligence will help man to optimise processes and the data collected, which is now becoming more and more efficient and, thanks to competition, more accessible.

Utility machine for the measurement team:

The German army brought a tank. We know that many innovations were made with the help of the army, and perfect localisation and accuracy in the army is the capping point.

Many universities participated with a stand at the exhibition. This way they can recruit students and especially PhD students with whom they can develop innovative ideas that will change the world.
You can even talk to the software developers and understand what’s behind the programmes or equipment so you can understand all the calculations or at least how they were designed.

I’ve also found people keen to get kids interested in geodesy by creating comic books: http://getkidsintosurvey.com

The biggest and most dynamic stand was the Hexagon/ Leica stand. You could find all their equipment and lots of exhibitors explaining what 3D scanners, total stations, gps and other equipment are and why to use them. There was a mini-conference area and a Private Lounge where you had the opportunity to talk to company executives (if you had made an appointment in advance).

The Germans organised it perfectly. With foodcourt and rest area. They even had a drone flying area.

The organisers keep us updated with pictures and news on the Intergeo TV youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/tvINTERGEO

We were glad to see other colleagues from all over Romania. We welcome the fact that there are people who are interested in news in the field of geodesy and surveying. This way we can all contribute to the development of the field and encourage architects, builders, developers and designers to choose the best 3D solutions for their projects.

See you next year at INTERGEO 2020 in Berlin from 13 to 15 October!
