BIM Certifications and How to Choose a Partner with Real Expertise

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has moved from an emerging practice to a baseline expectation on serious construction and infrastructure projects. Public clients increasingly mandate it, lenders and insurers look for it, and facility owners now expect the data generated during design and construction to remain usable for decades of operation.

That shift creates a practical problem for the people commissioning work. BIM is not a single product you can inspect on a shelf. It is a way of producing, structuring, and exchanging information across an entire project team. So when a developer, contractor, or asset owner sets out to choose a BIM partner, the real question is not “do they have the software?” It is “do they understand the standards, the workflows, and the information lifecycle well enough to deliver data we can actually use?”

What Is BIM?

Building Information Modeling is a collaborative method for creating and managing information about a built asset across its entire lifecycle — from early design through construction and into operation and maintenance.

A BIM model is not simply a 3D drawing. Geometry is only one layer. A well-structured model also carries structured data: materials, specifications, cost information, scheduling, performance parameters, maintenance requirements, and the relationships between components. That combination of geometry and data is what allows teams to detect clashes before they reach the site, quantify materials directly from the model, sequence construction, and hand over reliable information to the people who will run the building for the next thirty years.

BIM Is More Than Software

  • ISO 19650 is the international standard for managing information over the whole lifecycle of a built asset using BIM. It defines how information requirements are set, how it is produced and reviewed, and how it is handed over. Part 1 covers concepts and principles; Part 2 covers the delivery (design and construction) phase. If a partner cannot explain how they work to ISO 19650, they are improvising.
  • IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is the open, vendor-neutral data schema (formalized as ISO 16739) for describing and exchanging BIM data between different software platforms. IFC is what allows an architect’s model, a structural engineer’s model, and a contractor’s model to be federated without everyone being locked into a single vendor.
  • The Common Data Environment (CDE) is the single, agreed source of information for a project — the managed environment where models and documents are stored, versioned, reviewed, and shared. A properly run CDE is the operational backbone of ISO 19650.

Two further terms appear on almost every well-run project. The BIM Execution Plan (BEP) sets out how the project team will meet the client’s information requirements: standards, responsibilities, formats, and delivery milestones. The Asset Information Model (AIM) is the structured information handed to the owner at completion and maintained through operation — the difference between a building you can manage with data and one you manage with guesswork.

Standards are not bureaucracy. They are what make the information created during a project durable and portable — usable years later, by different teams, in different software.

buildingSMART International and openBIM

Much of this shared language comes from buildingSMART International, the global organization behind openBIM.

openBIM is an approach built on open, vendor-neutral standards — IFC chief among them — that allow information to flow freely between all the applications and stakeholders on a project. The alternative, “closed BIM,” ties a project to a single vendor’s ecosystem. openBIM keeps the client’s data independent of any one software company, which protects the long-term value of the information the client has paid to create.

Not all “BIM certifications” carry the same weight. Broadly, they fall into two categories:

It is deliberately software-neutral: it certifies understanding of open standards and workflows, not proficiency in a particular vendor’s product.

The programme is organized into progressive levels. Three are central for professionals working on real projects:

  • Foundation — knowledge-based certification covering the core principles of BIM, openBIM, and international standards. It establishes a common baseline understanding and is the prerequisite for further certification.
  • Management — aimed at professionals who manage digitally enabled projects. It provides strategic and organizational insight into openBIM delivery without requiring deep hands-on modeling detail — well suited to project managers, owners, and client-side decision makers.
  • Practitioner — the applied, hands-on certification for professionals actively delivering openBIM projects. It requires the Foundation certificate plus demonstrated practical project experience, and recognizes real competence in producing, coordinating, and managing information.
